  • Great question! All of these terms can be very confusing.

The key distinction between a registered dietitian/registered dietitian nutritionist (RD/RDN) and someone who refers to themselves as just a “nutritionist” lies in their education, training, and professional credentials. Registered dietitians are healthcare professionals who have completed specific educational and clinical requirements to earn their credential. RDs are regulated by professional boards and adhere to strict standards of practice.

The term "nutritionist" is not protected by law in many places, which means that virtually anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. This title does not require specific educational or professional requirements, and the quality and accuracy of the advice given can vary widely.

Now, what is a nutrition therapist?

A nutrition therapist is a specialized healthcare professional who plays a crucial role in the treatment and recovery of individuals with eating disorders and disordered eating. These professionals are typically registered dietitians with additional training and expertise in the field of eating disorders. In addition to providing individualized nutrition guidance, nutrition therapists utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches in order to help facilitate behavior change related to food, body image, and movement. Therapeutic frameworks that may be used in nutrition therapy include Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Using this unique set of skills, nutrition therapists support clients in moving away from disordered beliefs and behaviors and embracing a healthier relationship with food, body image, and movement.

  • We understand that the desire for weight loss is a common and completely understandable response to the pervasive weight stigma prevalent in our society. We want to acknowledge these feelings and ensure that they are heard and respected. Instead, we focus on promoting a more sustainable, evidence-based, and compassionate approach to health. Our goal is to help you build a positive connection with your body and food, prioritizing well-being over numbers on a scale. While we may not encourage active weight loss, we are here to discuss and unpack these emotions, allowing you to explore alternative paths to health and happiness that don't rely solely on weight.

  • Depending on the severity of your eating disorder/disordered eating, we may recommend that a treatment team be in place before we can work together. A treatment team may include a therapist, psychiatrist, and/or medical doctor. If additional professionals are needed for treatment, we are able to provide a referral.

  • At our nutrition practice, we prioritize delivering the highest quality of care to our clients, and to maintain this commitment, we have made the decision not to accept insurance. This choice allows us the freedom to provide personalized and comprehensive nutrition services without being bound by the restrictions that insurance companies often place on care. However, we understand the financial considerations of our clients, and we are more than happy to provide superbills for reimbursement. This means that you can submit the bill to your insurance provider to seek potential reimbursement for our services, depending on your policy.

Additionally, we provide reduced fee care for those who need it, as well as pro bono nutrition therapy via Project Heal. We believe in making our services accessible to as many individuals as possible while still upholding the integrity and quality of the care we provide.

  • We value and respect your time as a client and ask that you do the same in return. A 48-hour notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment. A full session fee will be charged if you do not give 48 hours notice, or do not show up for your appointment.
